Chapter Six

Thirty minutes later, Carly brought her horse to a stop a few feet off the trail. Jake dismounted, walking his horse and the spare over to the hitching posts. “I’m assuming this is as far as the horses go, right?”

Carly nodded as she dismounted. “We’ll leave them in that paddock over there with enough food and water to last ‘til we get back.”

They all began arranging the supplies, and after the horses were settled, Carly picked up a backpack. “Grab yours and follow me.”

“What’s in these?” Trey asked.

She started down an old trail that Jake noted was barely visible within the dense foliage.

“Don’t look,” Carly said. “You’ll see when we reach our destination. It’s a surprise.”

Jake took out his camera and shot some pictures as they walked. If they decided the location was suitable, he might as well be prepared to pitch it to Abe, the director. He already liked the feel of the place. The pass between the two walls of rocks jutted like skyscrapers on either side of them. Discovering a spot like this in the middle of the high plains was like stumbling on a secret underworld.

Evergreens, aspen, and birch covered every square inch outside the path. Flowering vines filled with fragrant blossoms he couldn’t identify wrapped around the vast trunks and wove a tapestry of color amidst the greens. He could hear the babbling sound of a stream somewhere. With all this vegetation, there had to be plenty of water nearby.

Jake wandered behind, photographing and studying the terrain. He watched Trey inspecting the landscape just as he did. His partner would note things differently. That’s why they worked so well together.

Suddenly, he heard it. The rush of water. A lot of it. He stopped and listened. A waterfall.

Carly glanced behind her and caught his attention just as the realization struck home with him. “There’s a waterfall here?” he asked.

She smiled and nodded. “That’s not all.” Her expression made him think of a cat with tail feathers stuck in its whiskers. Her excitement was evident and contagious. “Wait and see. It’s indescribable.”

Trey’s eyes glittered like a kid at the circus. “I can’t wait to see something that has you so wound up.”

She picked up her pace and the men followed. “Watch your step around the wet rocks. There are coral snakes up here. Those boots will protect your feet and legs, but not your hands if you slip and fall.”

“Uh,” Trey said, “got it. Thanks for the warning. I haven’t been around terrain like this in a long time.”

“It’s beautiful, but you still have of be careful. Like life, there’s danger lurking in the most beautiful places.”

Jake didn’t have to wonder if she was trying to make a point. He got it and chose to ignore it, for the time being. Instead, he kept asking questions and snapping pictures.

“What kind of butterflies are those? Hell, I’ve never seen so many different varieties in one place before. Trey, are you making notes?”

“No, I’m trying not to fall on my ass.
